Apples to Apples: How Studies of Congeneric  Marine Animals Shed Light on Biogeography, Evolution and Global Change.”

Our guest speaker will be Dr. George Somero, an Emeritus Professor from Stanford University.

George started his career with studies of narrow thermal tolerances of Antarctic fishes in the 1960s, and his work has continued to influence the entire field of comparative physiology and biochemistry ever since.

Along with Peter Hochachka, he wrote several editions of "Biochemical Adaptation," one of the definitive works on the process of physiological evolution in species inhabiting varying environments. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, was voted a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, has served on the editorial board of Science magazine, and is actively engaged in providing sound biological advice on the effects of global change (including ocean acidification) to resource managers and to state and federal government.
