6th Annual Leavey Presidential Chair Lecture

Please join us for the 6th Annual Leavey Presidential Chair Lecture: “African America Youth and Education: Issues of Healing and Social Justice,” with Shawn Ginwright, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Education, Africana Studies Department, and Senior Research Associate, Cesar Chavez Institute for Public Policy, San Francisco State University.

The lecture will focus on Dr. Ginwright’s groundbreaking work, which proposes a new movement of healing justice, particularly on the lives of African American youth, to repair the damage done by the erosion of hope and structural violence in urban communities. Drawing on ethnographic case studies, Dr. Ginwright's work chronicles how teacher activists can employ healing strategies within their work in schools and communities to overcome negative impacts on academic achievement and civic engagement by supporting their students to become powerful civic actors. Arguing that healing a community is a form of political action, Dr. Ginwright will emphasize the need to place healing and hope at the center of our educational and political strategies for social justice.

Hosted by the Loyola Marymount University Leavey Presidential Chair, the School of Education Office of the Dean, and the Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership for Social Justice.
