DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, DJ\, scholar\, and writer Lynnée Denise will pr
esent a performative lecture and listening session highlighting and explor
 ing ideas on gender\, sexuality\, race\, technology\, and musical-cross po
llination in the 1980s through a Diasporic lens. Drawing on critical songs
\, album covers\, visual culture\, and select photographs from Janette Bec
kman's recent exhibition "Rebels" at FOAM in Amsterdam\, Denise will demon
strate what she refers to as a "sound system of relations" to amplify key
overlapping political and musical ideas that surfaced through the interfac
ing of punk culture\, hip-hop\, and disco. \n\nAdditionally\, the talk wil
l trace the migratory nature of music and construct a living archive throu
gh engaging stories from neighborhoods\, stages\, studios\, and dance floo
rs that shaped the sonic landscape in select U.S.\, U.K.\, and Caribbean c
ities. \n\nCo-presented by Women & Gender Studies and African American Stu
