Come hear L.A.-based artist Diane Briones Williams discuss the role of research in her artistic practice as she works to excavate hidden histories of the art and culture of the Philippines. Williams creates mixed-media textile works, including wall hangings, suspended pieces, and sculptural weavings. Her practice explores how Filipinx histories, often forgotten or erased can be remembered through materials, memory, and embodied experience. 

Williams weaves with fabrics and objects collected from family and friends, reworking them into new forms that speak to lost stories and colonial legacies. She also experiments with pre-colonial dyeing methods using plants from the Philippines, food scraps, and minerals, reconnecting her art to indigenous traditions. Raised in the Philippines, Williams approaches her work not as an outside observer but as someone deeply rooted in these histories. Her practice is less about offering solutions and more about creating pathways to weave Filipinx identity and culture into contemporary art. 

Williams earned an MFA from the University of Southern California in 2021 and has participated in many dynamic group and solo exhibitions in the L.A. area, including the current exhibitions: The Precarious Life of the Parol, at the Museum of Art and History in Lancaster and A Stitch and Glitch in Time, CSUN Art Galleries in Northridge.
