September 17 is declared "Constitution Day," the anniversary of the completion of the writing of the US Constitution in 1787. LLS commemorates Constitution Day each year with a presentation on a constitutional law topic.
Prof. Aaron Caplan will give a presentation on a research project involving free speech rights under the First Amendment. In particular, his paper titled "Fight-or-Flighting Words" considers the flaws and fallacies behind the "fighting words" doctrine, a principle that -- among other things -- allows police to arrest people for verbally insulting them.
