Join Armando Durón and his son Maximilíano Durón, Senior Editor of ArtNews, in their first public discussion about the Durón Family Collection.

Armando Durón earned his BA degree in political science from Loyola Marymount University (’76) and his law degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. He and his wife Mary Salinas (LMU BA ’75) have been collecting Chicano art of Los Angeles since 1981. They have one of the most extensive collections in the country. Armando is a sought-out expert in the field. He is consulted by scholars and community activists about every aspect of Chicano art. He has been active in the area, not only as a collector, but as a supporter and attorney for artists, and a member of the board of various arts organizations, including the Social and Public Arts Resource Center (SPARC), the Latino Theatre Company, Self Help Graphics & Art, and the Vincent Price Art Museum. SPARC named its gallery the “Durón Gallery” as a tribute to his contributions. Durón has organized over a dozen art exhibitions, including “Other Footprints to Aztlan,” “A Short Essay on Chicano Photography,” “Time Refocused: The Photographs of Luis Garza,” and “The Other Side of Memory” among others. Durón has written extensively on the topic and participated on a variety of panels at the Latino Art Now conferences. He also taught a class at UCLA, “Chicana Art and Artists.”

Maximilíano Durón is a queer, Chicanx journalist and critic covering contemporary art. His writing focuses on the work of artists of color, specifically Latinx/Chicanx artists, queer artists, and their intersections, as well as curators, collectors, and scholars whose work has transformed the art world. He has been at ARTnews since 2014 and is currently senior editor, managing the publication’s art fair and Top 200 Collectors coverage. Durón is a winner of the 2023 Rabkin Prize for visual art journalists and a founding member of Critical Minded, an initiative that looks to support the work of a diverse intergenerational group of cultural critics of color. He received his undergraduate degree from NYU in journalism and art history in 2015.
