"Intellectual virtues" are the deep personal qualities or character traits of a good thinker or learner. They include traits like curiosity, open-mindedness, intellectual courage, intellectual tenacity. Growth in intellectual virtues is an important but neglected educational aim. I will provide a quick overview of what intellectual virtues are and why they are important in education. Next, I will explain several ways in which an emphasis on intellectual character growth can be incorporated into academic instruction at the university level. Participants will then be given an opportunity to think about and discuss how they might adapt some of these strategies in their own classes.

Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP to teachers@lmu.edu or x85866.

This program will be video and audio taped and may be podcast. By your willing participation in the program, you expressly and irrevocably consent to be photographed, videotaped and/or audio taped and quoted/cited. The films, tapes, and other digital recordings will become the property of the Center of Teaching Excellence, LMU.
