The William H. Hannon Library takes you to the movies this summer with highlights from our vast collection of art sketches and storyboard drawings by Hal Pereira, the renowned art director who designed many of the most memorable films of the 1950s-1960s. Featured in the exhibition are sketches Pereira made for Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Graduate, Hitchcock’s Vertigo, and numerous other classics.

The exhibition was curated by eighteen undergraduate students working in seven library departments. Delving into the Hal Pereira Art Sketches (LMU Collection 010), their reflections connect Pereira’s art to their own relationship with film, providing insightful analyses, whimsical musings, warm personal memories, and, above all, a testament to the importance of art design in a film’s formative journey.

We invite you to share our students’ experience, exploring the artistry that visually defined masterpieces of film history. Most of the films featured in the exhibition are also available for viewing via our library resources. Make this summer a Hal Pereira retrospective film festival!

Curators: Sarai Bogoratt, Lauren Brown, Jennifer Chua, Christiana Davis, Mario Gallardo, Cynthia Garcia, Julia Guanzon, Clara Hill, Megan Hokama, Erin Honigman, Ben Imperato, Eva Lopez, Tiffany Parham, Alex Perroots, Anthony Prodis, Daniela Villa, Katie Walsh, Morgan Wilkins
