The critique of gender binaries and biological sex has become ubiquitous due to feminist theory and queer theory. The Hindu vision of the Supreme Divinity as Divine Mother of the Universe (the only extant vision of Ultimate Divinity as feminine in global religions) has also been critiqued for playing a part in the promulgation of gender binaries. But is this vision gendered as we understand it? Is it part of a binary? Is it oppressive and exclusive? Or does it include and surpass all binaries?
We will explore these questions, and will examine the “She” beyond the boundaries of matter and spirit, creator and creation.
