DESCRIPTION:Reparations or reconciliation for the harms of policing became
a central plank of various social justice movements across the country last
summer. A feature of these social justice movements was the demand that th
e police acknowledge and account for the ways that they misused their power
to harm particular communities. Communities demanded that the police engag
e in a process that centers and elevates their experience and history of be
ing policed in a discriminatory way. What does justice for the harms of pol
icing look like? Does it take the form of a police–community reconciliation
process that could take place on a city-wide scale across the country? Or
does reparations for policing work independently of reconciliation? In this
panel\, we will discuss concrete proposals for reparations and reconciliat
 ion.
