Survivor Voices: Shifting the Conversation on Crime Victims’ Rights & Criminal Justice

Survivor Leadership Workshop: 9:00 AM - 3:15 PM
Presentation of Works from Survivor Leadership Workshop: 3:30 - 5:30 PM
Reception: 5:30 - 6:30 PM

No one chooses to become a victim. Those who do choose to report the crime are thrown into a criminal justice system without much, if any, preparation about how the process works and fewer opportunities for meaningful participation in the prosecution of their offender.  As a result, survivors report feeling re-victimized and re-traumatized by the criminal justice process. The Bottom line is that the criminal justice system is falling short in addressing the needs and concerns of victims.

Join us in a retreat at Loyola Law School hosted by the Rights in Systems Enforced (RISE) Clinic to support survivor leaders from diverse backgrounds utilize their experiences to identify and propose improvements to the criminal justice system that focus on integrating the voices of survivors and strengthening the rights of victims to ensure that they are treated with dignity and respect.
