LMU faculty, please join us at the Center for Teaching Excellence (University Hall 3030) on Monday, November 19th (12:30 - 2:00 PM) for The iGen Era of Higher Education: A Flipped Classroom Approach to the Case Study Teaching Method presented by Dr. Mitchell Hamilton, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Marketing.
About the event:
As the last wave of Millennials washes over our collegiate campuses, the metaphorical tide is bringing in a new breed of student: The iGeneration (i.e., iGen, Gen Z, or Post-Millenials). Born sometime after the mid 1990s, iGen students are more tech-innate, have a stronger connection to the collective consciousness, and more eager to make things than their predecessors, the Millennials (Philip and Garcia, 2013; Rosen, 2011; Rosen, 2010). Consequently, real-time professor-centered learning experiences may be losing their appeal in higher education (Rohm, Stefl, and Saint Clair, 2018; Wang and Heffernan, 2010). Furthermore, this learning paradigm shift has led to the recent emergence of more contemporary teaching styles (e.g., the flipped classroom). These styles are not just more interesting to the iGen; they also bring accelerated opportunities for greater classroom learning bandwidth, student engagement, and overall learning success. Please join us at the LMU CTE as Dr. Mitch Hamilton, from the Department of Marketing and Business Law, talks about the lessons he learns as he implemented an innovative flipped classroom approach to the case study teaching method. His talk will detail the insights he gained and will highlight the effectiveness of the simulated case study discussion video that Professor Hamilton created in the form of a sitcom parody.
