LMU students, faculty, staff, and members of the community (really, anyone and everyone!) are invited to join us on March 25, 2019 for a Wikipedia edit-a-thon.

Regardless of whether you are a novice or an expert Wikipedian, all attendees will have the opportunity to participate. Trainers will be on hand to teach beginners how to edit Wikipedia and help more experienced editors address problems and questions. The edit-a-thon will run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. but guests are encouraged to drop in at any time!

Everyone is welcome! If you are a guest to LMU's campus, please visit LMU's Parking website for information about on-campus parking.

Coffee and snacks will be available throughout the day for attendees. Guests are encouraged to bring their own devices, but we will also have a limited number of laptops on hand to borrow.

In collaboration with Jennifer Moorman’s WGST 1100 course, “Gender, Race, and Sexuality in Contemporary Society,” we will be focusing on improving Wikipedia’s representation of women in articles related to history, sexuality & gender, art to improve Wikipedia’s accuracy, evidence, and objectivity.

Why Edit Wikipedia?

“In today’s information landscape, there is no avoiding Wikipedia. Not only is it the largest encyclopedia, but it’s one of the 10 most visited websites in the world. As early as 2011, more than half of the U.S. population was already using Wikipedia for research, according to a Pew Research Center project. A major part of Wikipedia’s success is that anyone can contribute to its content. Many eyes can fix many errors, as they say, but what are we to do with the knowledge that the individuals behind those eyes are mostly men in their mid-20s? Enter the Wikipedia edit-a-thon. For the past few years, educational and cultural institutions have brought together women, people of color, LGBT communities and other underrepresented groups to collectively edit and improve Wikipedia’s content, with an eye toward greater inclusivity and broader perspective.”
